The Chief, Medical Service ensures that quality medical care is provided to the patients in a safe and clinically appropriate ! manner. The incumbent ensures that appropriate supervision is provided to the medical staff and to medical students rotating through Medicine Service. Duties and responsibilities include a variety of medical care management techniques, which requires knowledge, skills, licensures and experience as a physician. Position involves understanding of the requirements for: safety, evaluations, knowledge and skill in the procedures, administration and documentation of inpatient and outpatient medical care, knowledge of emotional behaviors and responses to variety of treatment procedures; and skill in maintaining effective work relationships with patients, members of the interdisciplinary treatment team, colleague leaders, executive leadership and members of affiliated programs. The Chief, Medicine Service demonstrates a commitment to the success of the organization as well as organizational stewardship.

Functions and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supervise and coordinate operations of the Medical Serv! ice including emergency treatment procedures and the emergency room. These operations are carried out with assistance from staff members from other clinical and support services that are supervised by their clinical service chiefs but provide a full range of medical services to patients who are either inpatient or outpatients assigned to Medicine.
  • Arrange and communicate to appropriate staff the availability of staff physicians and coverage during non-administrative hours.
  • Serves as the Site Coordinator for the Internal Medicine Residency Clerkships to ensure that teaching programs on Medicine are appropriate and that supervision of the residents and students is provided.
  • Collaborates with colleagues in the development of policies, procedures and guidelines to ensure adequate and comprehensive services and communicates these to staff physicians and other interdisciplinary team members.
  • Working with the appropriate Committee/Board, coordin! ates use of resources, including space, supplies and staffing.
  • Serves as a member of the Medical Center Clinical Executive Board, Medical Staff, Executive Quality Board and other committees as assigned. Ensures adherence of Acute MedicineÂ's medical staff to the bylaws, rules and regulations.
  • Ensure all the staff meets the facility mandatory requirements in education and compliance.
  • Evaluate the staff utilizing functional statements and performance pay agreements and follows the current guidelines on credentialing and privileging.
  • Ensures appropriate and timely medical record documentation, organizes staff in-service programs and encourages continuing medical education to staff while also participating in these activities.

    Qualifications & Evaluations

    In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following:

    Basic Requirements :
    • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the Dist! rict of Columbia.
    Preferred Experience: 1 (one) year of managerial or leadership experience and clinically trained in Internal Medicine; Current ACLS/BLS certification; and BC/BE in Internal Medicine.
    Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.
