Operates heavy and specialized equipment and performs maintenance and repair work to assure effective operation of the County road system. Assists in training and directing other employees in equipment operations and maintenance activities.
Patrols highways and constructs, maintains and repairs as assigned portion of the County road system and related structures. Lays asphalt for resurfacing and patches roads using hand tools and specialized equipment.
Operates grades to rebuild or level paved and gravel roadways and reshape road shoulders.
Operates backhoe and other heavy and specialized equipment to clean and dig ditches and culverts, loads materials into trucks and filling trenches. Replaces irrigation and drains piper under roadways.
Assists in training and overseeing the work of employees less experienced with maintenance and repair activities and equipment operation.
Drives trucks to haul gravel, asphalt, and other materials to and from work sites. Hauls front end loader and other equipment to and from job sites using semi-tractor and other vehicles.
Operates jackhammers, weed-eaters, mowers, and other small equipment to maintain roads and roadside. Removes debris from roads.
Removes snow and spreads sand for ice and snow control on roadways.
Controls traffic at work sites by setting up warning signs and flagging to guide traffic through work areas.
Installs and repairs guard rails, signs, and sign posts as needed.
Cuts brush and trims trees from right of way. Operates herbicide application equipment to clear weeds and other vegetations from roads.
Completes regular reports and records materials, time and equipment utilized to complete a project.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
High School diploma or GED and two years experience in road maintenance and repair or heavy equipment operation; or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge, and ability required to perform the job. Valid Washington State driver's license with Class A, CDL endorsement(s). Valid Flagging Certification. Valid Industrial First Aid Certification.
Knowledge of road systems and locations, related maintenance equipment, and construction and repair methods and procedures.
Knowledge of safe working practices.
Ability to operate heavy equipment and hand tools used in public works maintenance operations.
Ability to perform heavy manual work under dirty, confined, and uncomfortable conditions.
Ability to work independently and in crews.
Ability and willingness to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
