The Surgical technician performs technical tasks that support clinical operations. As the surgical technologist he/she performs a variety of duties in the department as a member of the surgical team. Must have the ability to scrub on all cases performed at the Center. They are responsible for the set-up and maintenance of sterile field. The scrub person is who handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Has an understanding of the procedures being performed, maintains the sterile field during surgical procedures, and performs other duties as assigned. They assist in the opening of the supplies/equipment for surgical cases. They assist in preparation for cases by “picking cases”.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES

Provides service excellence to all customers.

Receiving, sorting, inventorying, decontamination, cleaning, quality assurance and sterilization of instruments and instrument sets.

Loading and operation of washer sterilizers, ultrasonic cleaners and sterilizers.

Stamping, dating, storage and rotating of items, delivery of sterile and non-sterile items, inspection package integrity to determine sterility.

Uses and evaluates sterilizer test indicator, reporting positive results immediately.

Reporting of defective materiel or equipment and determination of appropriate action to repair replace items.

Processing of sterilizer test control registers.

Adherence to standards of practice/infection control for department and operating room.

Participates in preparation of the next day case cart supplies and distributes carts to the operating room in a timely manner.

Participates in timely delivery of instruments/supplies for in progress cases by being alert to the needs of the operating room and being responsive.

Prepares and transports instruments from the operating room to the decontamination room in a timely manner to assure all instruments are cleaned and sterilized between cases and before the department closes.

Ability to demonstrate appropriate sterile and aseptic technique.

Ability to perform scrub technologist functions according to AORN /AST recommended practices and Center policies and procedures.

Ability to operate equipment used in processing, instrumentation, such as ultrasonic cleaner, washer-disinfector, and autoclave, using the appropriate settings.

Ability to prioritize and have excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.

Ability to work effectively in stressful situations.

Ability to work with minimal supervision and anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the surgical team.

Ability to work with others within a team environment.

Set-up required operative fields, arranging instrumentation, equipment and supplies on the mayo and back table(s) as appropriate for the assigned case according to the Surgery Center’s policy and the surgeon’s preference card and in a manner that assures maintenance of the sterile field.

Scrubs all surgical services provided at Powder River Surgery.

Prepares for the next day’s scheduled procedures, as assigned, by pulling cases, by using surgeon’s preference cards to assure that all necessary supplies, instruments and equipment are available. Labels cases and prepares “needs list” accurately.

Handles specimens appropriately, per Center policies and procedures.

Assists in Center suite maintenance including case preparation, turn-over and terminal cleaning.

Assists with inventory control and stocking of supplies.

Adheres to CCMH policies and procedures.

Performs other duties as required.

Complies with the hospital’s Corporate Compliance Program including, but not limited to, the Code of Conduct, laws and regulations, and hospital policies and procedures.

Must be free from governmental sanctions involving health care and/or financial practices.

Participates in Center Marketing as requested.

Participates in the Quality Improvement Program activities including identification of opportunities for cost reductions and efficiencies.

Works to achieve and maintain regulatory certification and accreditation of the Center.

Maintains dress and appearance according to the Center dress code.

Diffuses/resolves conflict by appropriately communicating with those involved.

Accepts constructive criticism and gives suggestions in a professional manner.

Maintains acceptable attendance and punctuality to maximize contribution to the organization in accordance with Center policy.

Requests scheduled time off according to Center policy and procedure.

Provides notification for unscheduled absences or tardiness in accordance with established Center procedures.

Ability to flex work hours as needed and/or requested by management

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education: High school graduate or GED, graduated from surgical technologist program, certification (CST) preferred.

Licensure: None

Must have current Healthcare Provider CPR or Red Cross Professional Rescuer certification within 31 days of employment.

Working knowledge of all phases of central processing to include but not limited to theory, practice, standards.

Minimum three (3) years central processing /2 years surgical experience, ASC experience preferred.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Hand/eye coordination, fine and gross dexterity, able to speak clearly.

Interpersonal Skills: Ability to work staff and physicians. Able to communicate positively during stressful situations.

Essential Physical Requirements: Ability to lift/transfer patients in excess of 100 pounds, which may require pushing, pulling, and utilizing a full range of body movements. Ability to stand walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl.

Ability to withstand prolonged periods of standing and walking.

Essential Mental Abilities: Able to prioritize multiple details simultaneously. The ability to recall from memory the required instruments, procedures, and correct sequence of instruments for a variety of procedures. Able to speak, write, and understand English. Able to respond to instructions quickly.

Essential Sensory Requirements: Corrected vision, hearing to normal range. Able to communicate in an environment where surgical masks are worn.

Exposure to Hazards: OSHA CATEGORY I. TASK THAT INVOLVES EXPOSURE TO BLOOD, BODY FLUIDS, OR TISSUES. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or potential for spills or splashes of them, are Category I Tasks. Use of appropriate protective measures is required for every employee engaged in Category I Tasks.
