Summary
While upholding the Star Valley Medical Center mission, vision, and values, this key position is responsible for supporting the operations o f SVMC through the functions and responsibilities associated with central sterile processing duties. This is an at-will position.
The Sterile Processing Technician coordinates and collaborates the overall cleaning, decontamination, assembly and dispensing of surgical instruments, equipment and supplies needed for daily surgical procedures in surgery and related departments.
Job Duties
Essential -
- Responsible for control of all parts of the sterilization process including decontamination, prepping, packaging, sterilizing, documentation of sterilization, and sterile storage including remediation of equipment failures and hazards.
- Perform standard tests to monitor the effectiveness of sterilization procedures including selecting the appropriate cleaning methods.
- Direct patient care through sterilization procedures within the scope of your training and practice, according to state and federal regulations and facility pol icies and procedures.
- Provide integrity and sterility of products and services.
- Work in conjunction with the OR staff to provide timely sterile products.
- Maintain consistency and continuous workflow between the OR and Sterile Processing while practicing excellent customer service.
- Operate and maintain steris reliance machine; keep records of loads completed, items of loads and maintenance procedures performed.
- Operate and maintain decontamination equipment.
- Monitor surgery schedules daily, identifying general, specific, and potential needs for all cases.
- Operate and maintain steam autoclaves, keeping records of loads completed, items in loads, and maintenance procedures performed.
- Monitor and maintain appropriate records to remain compliant with applicable regulatory agencies, as well as reporting occurrences immediately to supervisors.
- Maintain strong working/collaborative relationships with other depar tments to ensure flow and continuity of services.
- Collects and delivers instrumentation throughout the hospital for sterilization.
- Attend in-service presentations, including but not limited to infection control, patient safety, quality improvement, MSDS and OSHA standards.
- Report defective equipment to supervisor or staff.
- Assist in transferring a patient from gurney to operating table as needed.
- Completion of a formal operating room procedures training program or an on-the-job training program supervised by the Surgery Department Director.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Assists in ensuring all equipment is functioning properly, troubleshoots as indicated, and schedules maintenance as needed, and effectively communicates status to the rest of the team.
- Assists with maintaining established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality improvement, safety, and environmental standards.< /li>
- Instructs staff in all processes and procedures of sterile processing and keeps them up to date of any changes.
- Studies new products, equipment, techniques, technologies, and service making recommendations to enhance performance and efficiency.
- Work as a team with the rest of the OR department, effectively communicate needs/ breakdowns, work together to efficiently solve problems and keep the surgery schedule running smoothly with all needed instrumentation.
- Learn basic medical terminology and other terms to effectively understand the needs of the operating team.
- Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
- Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
- Attend regular staff meetings and in-services.

Skills:

- CPR certifi cation

Experience & Education:
Essential-
- High school graduate or GED equivalent
- Prior medical training and experience
- Flexible schedule to be able to call durin g the week/weekends

- Ability to work in a physically demanding, high-stress environment
- Exposure to blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, chemicals, radiation, and repetitive motions
- Pushing and pulling heavy objects
- Full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients

- Lifting and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs
- Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range
