JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Patient Care Technician / Unit Clerk
DEPARTMENT: Emergency Department
REPORTS TO: Emergency Department Director
JOB SUMMARY
Answer the telephone, communicate with physician and nurses. Perform patient follow-up phone calls. Assist with calling transfer services, organization & faxing patient transfer papers. Maintain department logbook, statistics, perform routine daily duties: update whiteboards and stock rooms to PAR. Reconcile charges. Perform courteous patient and family customer services: offering warm blankets, offer beverages if appropriate and answer call lights. Assist room turnover during busy times. Perform Relias courses and attend department staff meetings. Assist in the collection of data for PI. Adhere to hospital policies. Practice good communication between departments, with physicians, staff and the department directors.
Implement directions from physician and nursing staff. Place patients on monitors and take vital signs. Help patients to the bathroom. Assist family members as needed. Assist as a VOS for high-risk patients. Assist in transporting stable patients to ancillary depar tments, inpatient rooms, or assisting discharged patients to their vehicles. Change linens and clean rooms. Stock supplies and rooms. Assist MDs with exams as requested. Other duties performed as needed.
The Patient Care Tech must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary for good communication with the age of patients or person providing the registration information for emergency department admission.

ETHICS AND COMPLIANCE
Employee performs within the pres cribed limits of West Park Hospital Districtâs Ethics and Compliance Program. Is responsible to detect, observe and report compliance variances to their immediate supervisor, or upward through the chain of command, the Compliance Officer or hospital hotline.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Answer the telephone promptly and in a polite manner. Take care of the call or direct to appropriate individual or department. Take accurate message, write it down and give to appropriate person.
Assist with calling transfer services, assist with transfer paperwork and faxing of patient transfer papers
Enter all patients into the department logbook and statistics. Perform ED PI collection.
Perform routine duties: update whiteboards, stock ED rooms to PAR, assist with room turnover during busy times, take specimens to the lab, assist with patien t transport as needed
Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity. Offer warm blankets, beverages if appropriate and answer call lights. Communicate patients ED delays with patients
Interact professionally with patient and family and provide explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
Maintain good working relationship within the department and with other departments, the physicians, staff and the director.
Answer EMS radio/phone. Advise physician and nurse. Transmit to incoming/and outgoing ambulances via EMS radio.
Assist with technical functions such as; Attaching the patient to the cardiac monitor, O2 Sat, and b/p machine, performing a 12 lead EKG
Reconcile charges
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS
Arrange follow-up care for patient as directed by physician or nurse if requested.
Retrieve X-ray reports from the printer and inform the physician or nurse.
Take specimens to the laboratory.
Call the House Supervisor for admissions / surgery cases according to policy.
Check and order supplies for the unit according to established par level.
Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
Maintain an uncluttered work area. Participate in the periodic cleaning of the desk area.
Participate in process/performance improvement (PI) activities by collecting data.
Meet educational requirements by completing Relias courses within 3 months of hire, attend any mandatory classes, current CPR certification, and attend monthly staff meetings.
Maintain an accurate and orderly filing system.
Adhere to dress code.
Perform other related duties as assigned and requested. Assist discharged patients to vehicles.
Follows hospital policies and procedures.
Obtain patient record from surrounding clinics via EMR.
Required to successfully complete the Relias medical terminology within three months of hire as a Unit Clerk.
16. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
17. Clean wheelchairs and other patient equipment.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Current Wyoming CNA, EMT or national certification as a CMA
EXPERIENCE
One year of experience in an acute care hospital preferred.
SKILLS
Good computer skills. Strong verbal and telephone communication skills. Ability to operate copiers, fax, adding machine, EMS radio. Organized work and able to work independently. Able to use common sense understanding to carry out instructions given in writing or verbally. Able to solve problems and make decisions within job description. Interact effectively with people. Perform several tasks simultaneously.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
BLS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS (HR will complete the remaining sections)
1 0-20% of work time: standing, walking, lifting, carrying or pushing 20 pounds or less. Any lifting of 35 pounds or more requires the use of an as sistive device and/or physical assistance. Up to 80% or more of work time: sitting.
X 2 15-85% of work time: standing, walking, lifting, carrying or pushing up to 35 pounds independently. When lifting, carrying or pushing greater than 35 pounds assistance or assistive devices will be used. 0-15% of work time sitting
3 15-85% of work time: standing, walking, lifting, carrying or pushing items up to 100 lbs. and occasionally 150 lbs. When lifting, carrying or pushing greater than 35 pounds assistance or assistive devices will be used. 0-15% of work time sitting
